This charming seaside town in Northern Germany boasts one of the biggest and best-preserved historic districts in the Baltic region, with much of its original medieval architecture still intact.
It was once an important port town in the fourteenth century, and formed part of the Hanseatic League.
Today, Wismar is a delightful town that oozes fairytale charm with its iconic red-brick buildings and Gothic-style architecture.
One of its most recognizable landmarks is the tower of St. Mary’s Church, which is all that remains of the original building that was destroyed during the final air raid during World War II.
Yet another impressive structure worth seeing is the Church of St. George, which includes an observation deck offering scenic views of the town.
Of course, a visit to Wismar wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Old Harbor (Alter Hafen), which is nearly identical to the one that was built in thirteenth century and still retains many of its old details.
