Surrounded by high bluffs, this city is nestled in the Hiawatha Valley on the Mississippi River. Winona is located in Southeastern Minnesota, to the east of Rochester.
In 1852, when the city was laid out, it was named Montezuma. However, in honor of a legendary Sioux princess who is said to have leaped to her death from the bluffs after being denied the right to marry her beloved, the name was changed to Winona.
